ACORN-REDECOM Pre-Conference Training Seminar
ACORN-Redecom and DIRSI are pleased to announce the Training Seminar on New Technologies and its Challenges for Telecommunications Regulation in Latin America. The seminar seeks to provide an overview of key regulatory issues in the ICT industry today, and to help develop the necessary tools to understand the implications of new technologies for spectrum allocation, universal access programs, competition policy and ICT-enabled economic development. We particularly encourage young scholars and advanced students, mid-level regulatory staff, civil society organizations, specialized journalists, and mid-level managers to apply. Travel scholarships are available on a competitive basis.
The Training Seminar will be held in Brasilia, on May 13th, 2010. To register, click here

First Latin American ICT Think Tank Takes Momentum
Less than two years ago a small group of academics from the leading ICT Research Centers and Universities from Latin America organized a regional conference on ICT. At the end of the conference in Buenos Aires I mentioned to two of the organizers; Professors Hernan Galperin from Univerisdad de San Andres and Raul Katz from Columbia, that by putting together the conference they had built the foundation to create a regional Think Tank on ICT.
And certainly, they did. The small group now transformed into a network of more than 30 world class institutions that seek to advance knowledge on the social, economic and political impact of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the Americas.
The network, called ACORN-REDECOM will have the III regional conference in Mexico City next month (May 22-23). The program and speakers are outstanding and I am sure it will be a total success.
The value ACORN-REDECOM brings to the region ...
The value ACORN-REDECOM brings to the region and policymaker is enormous. There is an incredible wealth of knowledge and research in LATAM and it was critical to find a forum and channel to spread this intelligence across the region -the network is conducting a call for papers-. Latin America was also missing an independent academic/research institution that could analyze a number of challenges we have on ICT and formulate policies for the region, in part to counter the U.S / EU regulation copy-paste tradition that does not necessarily reflects the structure and needs from the region.
I am fully committed to support this network of intellectuals and I hope to see you in Mexico next month. Supporting this group of top academics totally committed to the regions' progress is vital to the transformation of ICT in Latin America. You can register in the following URL: http://www.acorn-redecom.org/registration.html . BTW, ACORN-REDECOM is still looking for sponsors.
